While we’re still taking out the confetti from our hair after the seasonal parties and festivities, we can’t turn a blind eye to turning a new leaf in 2017! A total closet purge and decluttering is most likely a chore gone overdue. Yet, with the new year, if you’re embracing the philosophy of “out with the old and in with the new,” start with your closet – to keep your mornings slightly less stress-free and your stylistic confidence peaked. Block a time out and start the process with our guide to cleaning your closet like a professional.
Block out a few hours to concentrate on the wellness of your closet and create a music playlist. Embrace the clutter and search for happier tunes to pump yourself up. If you want, keep a snack handy, these clean-outs might take a while!
Take every single item of clothing from your closet out and pile it on the floor or bed. This task requires some floor space! While you’re at it, dust out your closet, and wipe it down!
Before you fold and put your clothes back into the closet, ask yourself these questions as you decide what to keep and what to throw out:
- Is it flattering on me?
- Can I wear this with confidence?
- Do I love it? If the answer is no, ask yourself why you don’t love it
Create three piles of clothes: Keep, Stash, & Toss. Organize your clothes according to what you want to keep, what you would like to store away for a different time (i.e. this could be clothes for seasonal use or fancy gowns for special occasions). Finally, pile the clothes you no longer wear as those to toss!
- Bonus: Follow the One Year rule. If you haven’t worn it in one year, why would you wear it the next? Toss it out.
The Clean-Up: Once you’ve sorted out your clothes, first stash away the clothes you won’t wear for the next three months. If certain pieces require more TLC than others, take care as you store (i.e. wrap in tissue paper or cotton canvas bags to preserve your clothes).
Tackle the clothes you love and will wear with certainty in the near future. Hang the dresses, tops, and even pants, while you fold the rest. If you want to go the extra mile, color-code your clothes for an easier way to organize your clothes.
Cleaning out your closet is an opportunity to discover clothes you didn’t know you had! It is also a time for you to purge out the clothes simply taking up space and make room for clothes you really want. Found a gem of an outfit hidden in your closet? Now you’ve found a new outfit for your first days of the year! Star the new year with a spruced up closet you’ll be grateful for every morning!
